Scientists Grow Sperm in Lab
March 27, 2011
Japanese scientists have discovered a way to grow mammal sperm cells.
BY SAMANTHA MCCLENDON
You're watching multisource science news analysis from Newsy
Scientists in Japan have successfully grown sperm in a lab. But the sperm cells weren’t created out of thin air. They came from testicular tissue in baby mice. NBC affiliate WCAU has more.
“The process was done in mice, but doctors say it could also work in people. The lab sperm went on to produce healthy and fertile mice.”
This breakthrough could help fight male infertility, and according to CNN, it could bring hope to those going through chemotherapy.
“So for people that are going through cancer treatment with chemotherapy, radiation, or other ways that they are deemed infertile. This could make all the difference.”
“Yea it’s going to be interesting to see how this develops and if we’re going to be seeing testing in humans.”
Not only could it help with adults, it could also help boys undergoing cancer treatment. Technology Review quotes a professor of biochemistry who says...
“‘When people with cancer undergo treatment, they are almost always rendered infertile. In men, you could freeze a sperm sample before treatment, but in [prepubescent] boys, you can't. But they do have testes cells, and if you could develop those in culture, they could be used in invitro fertilization down the line.’”
But some are skeptical about the idea. Keep in mind this involved MICE - not humans. An andrology professor tells the BBC...
"It is important to be cautious because sometimes species-specific differences in biology means that what works for one species does not work in another.”
And a WTXF reporter says don’t get too excited just yet.
“I think -- they've been doing this for decades with unsuccessful results. We're a long way off before you’re going to see some fake guys running around.”
“You're just worried women won't need men any more right?”
“No, my stock goes up if they can't get this done, my stock goes up. Supply and demand.”
While that anchor may not be worried about men’s fruitful future, a writer for Dvice sounds like he is.
“That's one less reason for women to keep our ***** around... [I]t can help women live without men forever and ever, if you take this to it's logical conclusion. We have many other good qualities, ladies! Please, spare us!”

You need my lovin', don't you know it's true
So if you please get on your knees
There are no bills, there are no fees
Baby, I know what your problem is
The first step of the cure is a kiss
So call me (Dr. Love)
They call me Dr. Love (calling Dr. Love)
I am your doctor of love (calling Dr. Love), ha
They call me (Dr. Love),

"Calling Dr. Love" is a song by the American hard rock band Kiss, originally released on their 1976 album Rock and Roll Over. The song was written by Kiss bassist/lead vocalist Gene Simmons at a Holiday Inn in Evansville, Indiana. It was the second single released from the album, and the group's fourth US Top 20 single, reaching #16 in Billboard. The song's title came from Gene Simmons' recollection of a Three Stooges short called "Men in Black", containing an announcement over a hospital intercom, "Calling Doctor Howard, Doctor Fine, Doctor Howard", meaning Moe, Larry and Curly, respectively. The songs' main riff is very reminiscent of the song "Cold Ethyl" by Alice Cooper, from the 1975 LP, "Welcome To My Nightmare".
A live version of the song was included on Alive II, released later in 1977. Since then, "Calling Dr. Love" has appeared on numerous Kiss compilation albums. In 2003, it appeared on Kiss's fifth live album, Kiss Symphony: Alive IV.

'Iron Dome' Foward Thinking On Mid-East Threat Israel deploys anti-rocket system
Israeli soldiers stand next to a launcher, part of the first "Iron Dome" missile defence system

Israel deploys 'Iron Dome' anti-rocket system
By Yoav Lemmer (AFP)March 27, 2011 _________________________________________________________________________
BEERSHEVA, Israel — Israel on Sunday stationed the first batteries of its "Iron Dome" short-range missile defence system in the south of the country, but stressed the initial deployment was experimental.
The unique multi-million dollar system was stationed outside the southern city of Beersheva, days after it was hit by several rockets fired from the Gaza Strip amid a rise in tensions and tit-for-tat violence.
But officials were quick to point out that the system, the first of its kind in the world, could not yet provide complete protection for the hundreds of rockets fired from Gaza into southern Israel.
"Israel has been under missile threat for 20 years, since the (1991) Gulf War. I do not want to foster the illusion that Iron Dome, which we are deploying today for the first time, will provide a complete or comprehensive answer," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet.
"Iron Dome is still in the experimental stage and we do not have the possibility of deploying batteries to protect every home, school, base and installation."
So far, Israel has acquired just two batteries and no decision has been made yet on where to deploy the second unit.
"Today we are trying to accelerate the operational tests in order to be ready as fast as we can with the first systems," said the commander of Israel's air defences, Brigadier General Doron Gavish, speaking to reporters next to the first operational battery.
The deployment of the interceptor has been delayed until now, with officials saying operating crews need more training and critics suggesting the system is prohibitively expensive.
The system, developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defence Systems with the help of US funding, is designed to intercept rockets and artillery shells fired from a range of between four and 70 kilometres (three and 45 miles).
Each battery comprises detection and tracking radar, state-of-the-art fire control software and three launchers, each with 20 interceptor missiles, military sources said.
Militants in Gaza and Lebanon's Hezbollah militia have fired thousands of projectiles at Israel in the past.
According to plans, the system will first be deployed along the border of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, from where militants fired a daily barrage of improvised rockets prompting Israel to launch a devastating 22-day offensive in December 2008.
It will then be deployed along the Lebanese border, from where Hezbollah militants fired some 4,000 rockets into northern Israel during a 2006 war. It was that experience which prompted the development of Iron Dome.
Israel believes Hezbollah now has an arsenal of some 40,000 rockets.
But a complete deployment is expected to take several years.
In May, US President Barack Obama asked Congress to give Israel 205 million dollars to develop the system, on top of the annual three billion dollars Israel receives from Washington.
Iron Dome will join the Arrow long-range ballistic missile defence system in an ambitious multi-layered programme to protect Israeli cities from rockets and missiles fired from Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, Syria and Iran.
A third system, known as David's Sling, is currently being developed with the aim of countering medium-range missiles.

Nuclear Disasters Never End - Modern Day Great Pyriamids that Last 10,000 Plus Years
The deteriorating “sarcophagus” containment building at Chernobyl.

When Does a Nuclear Disaster End? Never
Infowars.comMarch 27, 2011

The New York Times article “Lessons from Chernobyl for Japan,” reflects on the Chernobyl disaster and how its legacy still looms over us today as a very real threat. Those who believe in a quick fix for the Fukushima disaster would be wise to remember Chernobyl’s legacy. More importantly, with tens of millions of lives at stake, nation actors that have the ability to assist in mitigating this disaster now, but choose instead to squander their manpower and resources elsewhere (like in Libya), must remember that their actions today will be remembered and judged for centuries to come.
Below is a sobering look at the Chernobyl disaster and the many men who fought and died trying to contain it. There is also the little known tale of the scientists who over the years have risked their lives to assess and direct the management of the threat Chernobyl’s destroyed reactor continuously poses. We must look to history and take the catastrophic effects of Chernobyl’s disaster to heart. Downplaying the threat in Fukushima, Japan today needlessly puts millions of people at risk who might otherwise begin making preparations to leave the area on a long-term basis.
Knowledge is power, ignorance can literally be death.

Transcript Summary Unprecedented... Frankly no one knows how to end situation... Beyond ability of Japanese authorities to contain... Best guess on how this ends?... There is going to be a bigger breach than we have already seen in 2 and 3... Workers will be evacuated... We will see at least two core meltdowns and two spent fuel pool fires... It will end very, very badly, that is what I actually think is going to happen... This will take weeks, months to contain it in best case...

Those who think Japan’s Fukushima disaster is today’s headlines and tomorrow’s history need to take a good look at the Chernobyl disaster, which to this day is a continuing threat to the people of Ukraine. It will be hundreds of years before the area around the destroyed reactor is inhabitable again and there are disputes over whether or not Chernobyl’s nuclear fuel still poses a threat of causing another explosion. There is also a teetering reactor core cover and the deteriorating sarcophagus itself that may collapse and send plumes of radioactive dust in all directions.
NOVA – Inside Chernobyl’s Sarcophagus
The following episode of Nova won an Emmy. It covers the sarcophagus built to contain the remains of the destroyed reactor and the work of the Russian scientists, staff and soldiers who risked and continue to risk their lives in the clean-up operation.

The cleanup is still nowhere near finished in Chernobyl, 25 years after the world's worst nuclear accident. As far as Chernobyl is concerned it's just one rogue reactor, while Japan is struggling to control six.
This video highlights a recent exploration of the disaster site 25 years after the event. including the ghost town of Pripyat.
