Hermann Black Snakes help educate Kindergarteners

RITENOUR SCHOOLS > School welcomes snakes to class • In the past few years, kindergarten teachers at Marion Elementary in the Ritenour School District have offered students a variety of hands-on lessons about insect and animal life cycles. Students have incubated and hatched chicken eggs, raised tadpoles and even grown ladybugs from larva. This semester, they have added reptiles to the mix. Kindergarten teachers brought three black rat snake eggs from a farm in Hermann, Mo. Students witnessed the hatching and now the tiny spotted snakes are being kept in a small aquarium in the kindergarten classrooms. Students take turn observing the reptiles every day under the guidance of their teachers. The snakes will be returned to the wild in Hermann.
