Missouri Budget Woes Will Affect Road Snow-Removal This Winter

For Missouri snow-removal crews, the goal is now 'passable'

This winter, Missouri snowplow crews are charged with making highways "passable," not necessarily clear.

Missouri Department of Transportation officials cite a tight budget and flat fuel tax receipts for the change.

They promise smarter use of equipment and technology but acknowledge it will mean fewer sweeps by plow trucks along highways, particularly on those less-traveled.

The first test could come this weekend, when the National Weather Service expects rain Saturday followed by an inch or less of snow. The big storm is expected to stay far to the north. But temperatures are forecast to fall from the high 40s into the teens by Saturday evening, made worse by high winds — creating the threat for ice on the highways.
