Students volunteer to shovel snow for elderly residents

COLUMBIA— Three MU students helped two elderly women Thursday by shoveling their driveways after the blizzard. 
Carly Love, a sophomore peer adviser at Excellence Hall, heard about the volunteer opportunity through her hall coordinator. The Boone County Council on Aging sent a call for help throughout Columbia for volunteers willing to shovel driveways of the elderly. 
Love, along with freshmen Hannah Anderson and Adam Gerke, wanted to help during the snowstorm, but they did not realize how critical their help was until they began to survey the situations of the elderly women.
"I did it out of 'Yeah, I want to help someone, and I'm really bored,'" Anderson said.
It turned out to be an eye-opening experience — Anderson said the women were able to scoop small paths from their houses, but since the snow was so heavy, they could not make enough of a path to get out.
"It was really interesting to see how these people were literally trapped in their own houses," Anderson said.
All three students shoveled snow for almost three hours.
