The Missouri Statehouse received a nod Tuesday night from comedian Jay Leno, who mocked a Senate bill that would significantly weaken child labor laws.

"And in Missouri, Republican state Sen. Jane Cunningham has introduced a bill that would eliminate her state's child labor laws," Leno said at the conclusion of his monologue on "The Tonight Show."
"Well, yeah, I mean, why should the 10-year-olds in China be getting all the good factory jobs?"

Specifically, the bill would legalize employment for children under the age of 14, end inspections of facilities employing children, and remove restrictions on the number of hours a child may work.

A Senate panel has not yet heard the legislation, but that could soon change: Cunningham, of Chesterfield, chairs the General Laws Committee, which has been assigned to hear the bill.
