(KMOV) – Strong winds fueled grass and brush fires across the Midwest, and dozens of fire crews have been fighting fires across the St. Louis area all day.

Three of the biggest fires started in Potosi, Collinsville and Jefferson County. The most damage is in Potosi where firefighters are still battling three blazes. At least one home has been destroyed and others are in jeopardy.

More than 500 acres of forest have already burned, and several more are still burning. Firefighters think three major blazes were sparked by controlled burns that got out of hand when the wind whipped up embers.

Potosi is heading the firefighting efforts, and had to call in the brush task force for backup.

Firefighters from as far as Ladue and Fenton to Cuba, Sullivan, and New Haven-Berger are helping tackle the blazes throughout the night.
