(NaturalNews) The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) recently published a study in the journal PLoS One highlighting the worst prescription drug offenders that cause patients to become violent. Among the top-ten most dangerous are the antidepressants Pristiq (desvenlafaxine), Paxil (paroxetine) and Prozac (fluoxetine). Concerns about the extreme negative side effects of many popular antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs have been on the rise, as these drugs not only cause severe health problems to users, but also pose a significant threat to society. The ISMP report indicates that, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System, many popular drugs are linked even to homicides. Most of the drugs in the top ten most dangerous are antidepressants, but also included are an insomnia medication, an attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drug, a malaria drug and an anti-smoking medication. As reported in Time, the top ten list is as follows: 10. Desvenlafaxine (Pristiq) – An antidepressant that affects serotonin and noradrenaline. The drug is 7.9 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs. 9. Venlafaxine (Effexor) – An antidepressant that treats anxiety disorders. The drug is 8.3 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs. 8. Fluvoxamine (Luvox) – A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drug that is 8.4 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs. 7. Triazolam (Halcion) – A benzodiazepine drug for insomnia that is 8.7 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs. 6. Atomoxetine (Strattera) – An ADHD drug that is 9 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs. 5. Mefoquine (Lariam) – A malaria drug that is 9.5 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs. 4. Amphetamines – This general class of ADHD drug is 9.6 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs. 3. Paroxetine (Paxil) – An SSRI antidepressant drug that is 10.3 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs. It is also linked to severe withdrawal symptoms and birth defects. 2. Fluoxetine (Prozac) – A popular SSRI antidepressant drug that is 10.9 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs. 1. Varenicline (Chantix) – An anti-smoking drug that is a shocking 18 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs.

First of an ongoing series Until March, Casaundra Bronner, 39, worked for one of the largest and certainly the most famous employers in St. Louis — Anheuser-Busch. Bronner had been there for 11 years, working her way up to a marketing manager job. "My last position, I really enjoyed it," says Bronner. "[The layoff was] like a rug taken from under me." She was among hundreds the company laid off. Nationwide, there are more than 14 million people out of work, and most economists say it will be years before the country returns to full employment. In terms of the labor market and the unemployment rate, St. Louis, Mo., is very similar to rest of the nation. Over the next year, NPR will follow Bronner and five others who live in the greater St. Louis area who are currently unemployed as they search for work. Bronner never thought it would take so long to find a new job. Her search has already spanned nine months and it's taking a financial and emotional toll for Bronner — a single mother with two daughters in elementary school. "It's difficult because I'm what they have," she says. Her daughters ask why she can't buy them the things she used to be able to. A group of more than 100 scientists and experts say in a new report that California faces the risk of a massive "superstorm" that could flood a quarter of the state's homes and cause $300 billion to $400 billion in damage. Researchers point out that the potential scale of destruction in this storm scenario is four or five times the amount of damage that could be wrought by a major earthquake. It sounds like the plot of an apocalyptic action movie, but scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey warned federal and state emergency officials that California's geological history shows such "superstorms" have happened in the past, and should be added to the long list of natural disasters to worry about in the Golden State. The threat of a cataclysmic California storm has been dormant for the past 150 years. Geological Survey director Marcia K. McNutt told the New York Times that a 300-mile stretch of the Central Valley was inundated from 1861-62. The floods were so bad that the state capital had to be moved to San Francisco, and Governor Leland Stanford had to take a rowboat to his own inauguration, the report notes. Even larger storms happened in past centuries, over the dates 212, 440, 603, 1029, 1418, and 1605, according to geological evidence. The risk is gathering momentum now, scientists say, due to rising temperatures in the atmosphere, which has generally made weather patterns more volatile. The scientists built a model that showed a storm could last for more than 40 days and dump 10 feet of water on the state. The storm would be goaded on by an "atmospheric river" that would move water "at the same rate as 50 Mississippis discharging water into the Gulf of Mexico," according to the AP. Winds could reach 125 miles per hour, and landslides could compound the damage, the report notes. Such a superstorm is hypothetical but not improbable, climate researchers warn. "We think this event happens once every 100 or 200 years or so, which puts it in the same category as our big San Andreas earthquakes," Geological Survey scientist Lucy Jones said in a press release. Tax break for small businesses on agenda of Missouri Legislature

Small businesses often get left out when tax breaks are given out. That's the thinking behind the first bill up for debate in the Missouri House this week.The plan would give small businesses a $10,000 tax deduction for every new job they created that paid at least the county's average wage. The deduction would double if the firm also offered health insurance and paid at least half the employee's premium. Businesses employing fewer than 50 full- or part-time employees would be eligible. Republicans, who enjoy a commanding 106-57 majority in the House, have made the bill a top priority. In addition to the tax break, it contains Speaker Steve Tilley's proposal to extend a ban on new state rules and increased user fees for small businesses. Under the bill, eligible businesses could claim the deduction for each new full-time job created in a tax year, starting Jan. 1, 2011. If a business creates a job in 2011, for example, it could claim the deduction in its 2011 tax return. Mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have been cast as the major villains of the financial crisis, but Michael Hudson reports that Wall Street firms were the prime offenders.
Ask many Americans who’s to blame for the nation’s economic mess, and two names come to mind: Fannie and Freddie.
They see Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as the villains of the financial crisis.
GOP.gov, the official website for Republicans in the House of Representatives, says flatly: “Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were the main cause of the nation’s current financial turmoil.” Many critics, including Republican appointees to the federal Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, blame the two government-chartered mortgage underwriters for pushing lenders to make riskier loans and leading the way into the financial crash.
The evidence indicates Fannie and Freddie contributed to the mortgage meltdown, but they played a secondary role to Wall Street. Wall Street firms and the mortgage lenders they bankrolled led the growth of the market for subprime loans and other risky mortgages.
Government data show Fannie and Freddie didn’t take the same risks that Wall Street’s mortgage-backed securities machine did. Mortgages financed by Wall Street from 2001 to 2008 were 4½ times more likely to be seriously delinquent than mortgages backed by Fannie and Freddie.
Tagging Fannie and Freddie as the primary suspects in the mortgage debacle diverts attention from bigger offenders and from policy decisions that helped create the climate for out-of-control lending.
Some 6 percent of Fannie- and Freddie-sponsored loans made during that span were 90 days late at some point in their history, according to Fannie and Freddie’s regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency. By contrast, the FHFA says, roughly 27 percent of loans that Wall Street folded into mortgage-backed investments were at least 90 days late at some point.

Returning Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais did indeed let it be known that he wasn't going to hold back in skewering Hollywood's most famous celebrities. And, in what will undoubtedly be his last hosting gig for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (and, who knows, maybe any Stateside awards) he didn't disappoint. But in the process of making searingly funny jokes at more than just the obvious targets (Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, the HFPA itself), the heat he put into the punch lines might have made him more of the story than the actual winners. And yet, it made for compelling -- if sometimes wince-inducing -- television. Given the staid lameness of most awards shows -- hello, Emmys -- at least he kept those who are not in the industry laughing uproariously. (His "I warned them" line came after a particularly funny joke about Hugh Hefner's new fiancee, complete with physical comedy and facial expressions). Gervais' biting lines were scattered at various stars (and movies like The Tourist), with not everyone taking kindly to the treatment. Bruce Willis seemed miffed to be called the father of Ashton Kutcher, Robert Downey Jr. seemed to take slight umbrage about his rehab past (before going into his own salacious and super speech), etc. Even when the jokes weren't directed at them, some stars took gentle swipes back, as when Tom Hanks, who just received a rave recitation of his career achievement from Gervais, protected Tim Allen, who received none. Gervais's jokes were so incendiary that when he went missing during the second half of the show, the Twitterverse lit up with suggestions that he'd been fired backstage. Giffords Improves As Shooting Investigation Continues

Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' condition has been upgraded from critical to serious, primarily because she was taken off a ventilator over the weekend and is breathing on her own. Surgeons performed a tracheotomy on Saturday and inserted a feeding tube. Doctors say her recovery is still going well, considering her injuries. Two other shooting victims remain in the hospital in good condition. Meanwhile, the investigation continues into what motivated a gunman to shoot 19 people — killing six of them. Jared Loughner, the 22-year-old accused shooter, is in federal custody and faces charges that include killing federal employees and trying to assassinate a member of Congress. The Washington Post is reporting the federal trial will be moved to San Diego because of pre-trial publicity. But in a written statement, the Justice Department says it plans to bring the case in Arizona and will oppose any change of venue motions. Pima County Sheriff's spokesman Jason Ogan says federal agents have control of the evidence now. But there is still the matter of state charges that could be filed against Loughner. Sergeant First Class Robert Pharris, of Seymour, died January 5 when his vehicle hit a roadside bomb.

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — A soldier from Ste. Genevieve, Mo., assigned to the 101st Airborne Division has died after an explosion in Afghanistan.
The Army said Sgt. Michael J. Beckerman, 25, died Friday in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
Beckerman arrived at Fort Campbell in January last year and was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Support Troop Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.
Beckerman joined the Army in September 2004. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge. Thanks for posting this Prayer Chain Letter! Please add my thoughts and prayers for the safety and well-being of all now serving in the United States military. On this day of remembrance, I particularly remember my deceased father who served as an Army Medic during WWII. Some of his WWII veteran buddies still reside here in Hermann. I recall that my father never liked to talk about the horrible things he saw in North Africa and Italy. As a kid, I sensed that reluctance to talk about war among all of his V.F.W. friends. They were indeed America's "Greatest Generation"! God bless them all for keeping the world free for democracy! And God bless all of our brave young servicemen and servicewomen for following faithfully in their fine American tradition!

"One small story from the video . . . towards the end, there's a photo of a young man surrounded by photographs and letters (a few of the pictures are of B-24 Liberators). This young man was lost with his entire crew while flying in a B-24 ...over the Atlantic. I bought his training yearbook, which included all of these photos of his family, friends and girlfriend. Also in the book were signed letters of condolence from his squadron mates, his squadron commander, the mayor of St. Louis and Hap Arnold, CIC of the Army Air Force. The back of the book was filled with news clippings about his death. Sad . . . what's sadder is that I found this in a BOX OF JUNK at a consignment auction. How this ends up almost being thrown on the rubbish pile is a shame. Either his family didn't care, didn't know it was there or . . . there is no family. I am happy to have preserved his memory. I won't sell this item. Just look at that kid's face. He WAS just a KID. I thank him and people like him every day."

A 26-year-old soldier from rural Wentzville was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan. Army Specialist Justin Culbreth died when his vehicle came into contact with an improvised explosive device (IED). The exact date of his death remains unknown. Culbreth's parents were notified of his death on Wednesday.
Culbreth, a married father of two, received his GED from Warrenton High School after years of home schooling.
Culbreth was stationed out of Tennessee. It is not yet known where or when funeral and burial services will take place. CLICK HERE FOR MORE
