According to The Associated Press, Wayne, Mich., City Manager John Sechs says workers have pulled a man's body from the wreckage of a furniture store in the town. He was identified as James Zell, 64, of Westland, Mich. One other person is still missing.
As rescuers in Wayne, Mich., continue to search for two people believed trapped in the rubble, authorities have widened the evacuation zone around a furniture store that was leveled earlier today by what's believed to have been a natural gas explosion.
The Detroit Free Press reports that at least "100 homes and 250 to 300 people have been evacuated, assistant to city manager Carrie Shelton said."
The Detroit News writes that:
"Gas officials are evacuating City Hall and additional homes after detecting a second gas leak in the neighborhood where an explosion this morning left a store owner seriously injured and two others possibly buried in rubble."The News adds that:
"The [William C. Franks] store, which had been a mainstay business in this community since 1963, has been reduced to rubble. Broken wood frames, cinder blocks and remnants of dry wall were scattered near the building that now looks like a house of cards that has partially fallen down. The roof has totally collapsed. The windows of buildings next door were blown out..
"The explosion, which shook area homes and frightened residents, could be felt as far as five miles away, witnesses said."
