A Washington man hunting for mushrooms near St. Clair was treated at a local hospital Sunday after suffering an apparent gunshot wound to the calf, the Franklin County Sheriff's department said. Christopher Stringer, 28, told deputies he was mushroom hunting in the area of the Meramec River when he felt a sharp pain in his leg, and noticed blood when he lifted his pant leg. The pain was the result of a bullet traveling through his calf, likely from a small caliber projectile, the department said.
Stringer told deputies he did not hear a gunshot, but the noise may have been blocked by the high winds. He was treated at St. John's Mercy Hospital in Washington and released.
According to the department, deputies conducted a search of the area but were unable to find anyone who may have fired the shot. The incident was believed to be accidental.
