Shelby Winkelmann: HERMANN HIGH SCHOOL STANDOUT NAMED GATORADE® MISSOURI GIRLS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

HERMANN HIGH SCHOOL STANDOUT NAMED GATORADE® MISSOURI GIRLS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

CHICAGO (March 10, 2011) — In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Shelby Winkelmann of Hermann High School as its 2010-11 Gatorade Missouri Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Winkelmann is the first Gatorade Missouri Girls Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Hermann High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Winkelmann as Missouri’s best high school girls basketball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award announced in March, Winkelmann joins an elite alumni association of past state girls basketball award-winners, including Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central HS, Ill.), Diana Taurasi (1998-99 & 1999-00, Don Antonio Lugo HS, Calif.), Maya Moore (2005-06 Collins Hill HS, Ga.), Rashanda McCants (2004-05, Asheville HS, N.C.), Shyra Ely (1999-00, Ben Davis HS, Ind.) and Lisa Leslie (1988-89, Morningside HS, Calif.)
The 5-foot-9 senior guard led the Bearcats to a 22-5 record entering the first round of the Class 3 state tournament against Skyline, scheduled for March 9. Entering the state postseason, Winkelmann was averaging 28.0 points, 8.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.3 steals per game while posting a 59.0 field-goal percentage. A three-time returning Class 3 All-State selection as named by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association, she averaged 27.6 points per game as a junior, 28.5 as a sophomore and 21.3 as a freshman. Winkelmann owns the Four Rivers Conference career scoring record and ranked fourth in Missouri history at the time of her selection.
Also a volleyball standout, Winkelmann has maintained a 4.28 weighted GPA in the classroom and ranks No. 1 in her graduating class. She serves as vice president in Hermann’s senior class and the Distributive Education Clubs of America chapter as well as secretary of the Future Business Leaders of America chapter. In addition to donating her time as a youth basketball and volleyball instructor and referee, Winkelmann has volunteered locally on behalf of a food pantry, her church, A-Plus Tutoring, the Special Olympics and Young Achievers International.
“While Shelby’s stats are very impressive, it is her attitude, character and work ethic that truly set her apart,” said Hermann Head Coach Todd Anderson. “Shelby is the ultimate student-athlete. She is ranked No. 1 in her class, excels on the court and is very involved in other clubs and organizations in our school and community. She approaches practice the same way she does games—with an all-out, maximum effort. She is a tremendous role model for our younger athletes. Shelby’s stats speak for themselves, as she is an extremely talented basketball player, but they give you a very limited view of the overall quality of the individual.”
Winkelmann has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball on scholarship at the University of Nebraska this fall.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by ESPN RISE and the Gatorade high school sports leadership team, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
Winkelmann joins recent Gatorade Missouri Girls Basketball Players of the Year Jazmin Hitchens (2009-10, Incarnate Word Academy), Katherine Harry (2008-09, Rock Bridge), and Kathleen Scheer (2007-08, New Haven) among the state’s list of former award winners.

Supersize No More: Subway Ousts McDonald’s

March 10, 201

Sandwich chain Subway has knocked McDonald’s from its perch as the fast food king with their growing number of restaurants around the world.

Move over McDonald’s - we’ve got a new king. Mickie D’s is no longer the world's largest restaurant chain. HLN tells you why Subway reigns supreme.

“The chain had 33,749 Subway shops worldwide at the end of 2010, that beats Mc Donald’s burger joints by 12 locations. Subway says about half of it’s growth is happening overseas. It says it’s also found really unusual place as setup shop and we’re talking a river boat, a church, car dealers, bowling alleys, casinos...” HLN

Daily Mail reports
that although Subway does have more stores, it is still nowhere near as profitable as McDonald’s. TIME Magazine says McDonald's is taking the news pretty well saying they “are committed to being better, not just bigger.”

A blogger from The Stir attributes Subway’s success to its mantra: “Eat Fresh.”

“Subway is healthier (than) … McFatty-no-friends. It's easier to walk into Subway and pick one of their seven subs containing 6 grams of fat or less than trying to decide between 5-piece McNugget and the McChicken.”

BORAT IN THE BUFF Naked Streaker Tackled By Football Soccer Player

Red Card for Tackling Streaker?

Dorchester Town football player-manager wrestles down a Borat streaker, but gets the red card.

It was an illegal and unusual tackle that earned Dorchester  Town player-manager Ashley Vickers a red card during an English soccer match. Check out the viral video from ITN.

“Now the impatient footballer is taking matters into his own hands. There goes Dorchester player manager he’s running to wrestle him down to the ground. Oh and there goes his wig."

And down went the streaker -- but not without penalty. The ref booted Vickers from the game for violent conduct on the field. A Daily Mail referee expert says...

“This clip probably validates the question ‘Who'd be a referee?’The law doesn't stipulate who you need to act in a violent manner towards - just that you have acted in a violent manner.”

But an ABC Sports blogger says - what rule?

“Where in the footballing rulebook does it say it's illegal for a player to tackle a streaker on the pitch?”

And an ESPN blogger adds - security wasn’t able to get the streaker off the field - so what’s wrong with a little WWE-style takedown?

“Not only did [Vickers] stop the Borat in the buff from further delaying play, he also did it in a totally kickass, totally Triple H kinda way.”

As for Vickers, he says - maybe it wasn’t the best decision he ever made.

“I just wanted to help them and get on with the game. And obviously both teams wanted to go on and win it.”

So ...bad call? Or should Vickers have remembered - soccer isn’t football.

Dover Delaware 3 Female Street Brawl VIRAL VIDEO Lands Ladies in Jail 7 Total Busted So Far

Female Trio Busted For Street Brawl Gone Viral

Video shows victims swarmed outside Delaware home

_________________________________________________________________________
3/9 UPDATE: Cops bust four more Dover street brawlers
MARCH 7--A wild street brawl captured on video (and gone viral online) has resulted in the arrest of three female assailants and Delaware cops are confident that additional busts will follow.
As seen in the below video (which contains profanities), a verbal dispute turned violent when two Dover residents were attacked by a swarm of neighbors who punched and stomped the victims in front of their East Reed Street home.
Police began investigating the March 2 attack shortly after receiving a 911 call about “a large fight at that location,” according to Captain Tim Stump of the Dover Police Department.
On Thursday, cops arrested Gloria Bolden, 44; Latasha Wright, 22; and Jazzmen Bolden, 19, in connection with the beating (they are pictured below, left to right). Each defendant was charged with disorderly conduct, conspiracy, and two counts of assault.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the female victim, 33, was briefly hospitalized after suffering fractured ribs and a collapsed lung during the attack. The male victim, 24, received stitches for a laceration on his head.
In an e-mail, Stump noted that he was “confident more arrests will follow.” That police probe is likely being aided by the fight video, which surfaced over the weekend and clearly shows many of the suspects who participated in the beating.
