Special Weather Statement | ||
Statement as of 6:40 AM CST on November 24, 2010 ... Strong to severe storms tonight with locally heavy rainfall... ... Wintry precipitation expected for Thanksgiving day... A strong storm system centered over the northern plains will make its presence known over our region over the next couple of days. Rich moisture from the Gulf of Mexico is being tapped and overrunning cooler air to the north to result in ample chances for rain with imbedded thunderstorms today... but especially during the morning hours. Some of the stronger storms through mid afternoon may contain small hail. After a brief break during the afternoon hours... a more intense round of rain and thunderstorms will fire up as a strong upper level disturbance and surface cold front approach from the west. Rainfall amounts tonight may exceed two inches in some areas... with the more favored areas being to the south and east of the Saint Louis Metro area. This could lead to some minor flooding. The thunderstorms tonight... as they develop ahead of the strong cold front... may also exceed severe limits with the potential for large hail... damaging winds... and isolated tornadoes. The precipitation will continue deep into Thanksgiving day... especially for the Saint Louis Metro area... southeast Missouri... and southwest Illinois. Much colder air will spill very rapidly in behind the cold front and is expected to change the precipitation over to freezing rain with some sleet and snow possible at the very end. At this time... only a very light glazing is expected primarily on untreated Road surfaces as temperatures hover just below freezing and with ground temperatures being somewhat warmer from the recent mild spell over the past few weeks. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for further details or updates on this complex and strong storm system. |
