HOUSTON • Thirty-five days before, they had gathered inside a muted home clubhouse at Busch Stadium to pick one another up from a three-game sweep that had tattered their season and driven many outside the walls to question their credibility, even their fortitude.

The message was simple: Even if others had written off their season, the larger disappointment would occur if they as players followed.

Wednesday night before 24,358 at Minute Maid Park, the Cardinals offered final testimony to that Aug. 24 gathering by disposing of the 106-loss Houston Astros in matter-of-fact fashion, 8-0. An hour later, the Cardinals were in the playoffs as the NL wild-card team when Atlanta lost to Philadelphia in 13 innings.

The Cardinals (90-72) immediately removed all suspense by taking a 3-0 lead before making their first out and strong-arming a 5-0 edge before ace Chris Carpenter (11-9) threw his first pitch. The rest was details as Carpenter threw a seamless 106-pitch complete game that paused for only one walk.

After opening the game with five consecutive hits, the Cardinals reached Astros starter Brett Myers (7-14) for 10 hits before the home club reached Carpenter for its second. After rallying from a five-run deficit to win Tuesday, the Cardinals constructed their most prolific first inning of the season en route to their 18th September victory.

They won with their pitching coach, Dave Duncan, in attendance for the first time since Aug. 19. A team that slouched from the field five weeks before embraced each other as it exited Wednesday. Carpenter paused long enough to embrace manager Tony La Russa, whose message he helped relay during that August meeting.

The Cardinals last led their division July 25 and found themselves trailing the Braves by 10½ games for the wild card after being outscored by the Los Angeles Dodgers 24-7 during what appeared to be a ruinous Aug. 22-24 series.

Coincidence or not, the Cardinals followed up their clubhouse meeting with a 23-9 rush in which they won nine of 10 series, including three-game sweeps of the Braves and NL champion Milwaukee Brewers.

Spending five weeks on the edge gave way to Wednesday's quickie beatdown.

During a 10-hitter rally, the Cardinals produced five hits in Myers' first 22 pitches. Five players contributed a first-inning RBI, beginning with first baseman Albert Pujols and ending with shortstop Nick Punto, fresh off Tuesday's four-hit game.

Carpenter, who opened the season 1-7, closed with a 10-2 run beginning June 23. He offered a vintage performance against an overmatched lineup that managed nothing more than a lone single in the fourth and sixth innings. The Astros pushed only one runner to second base and never reached third. Carpenter reached the eighth inning in 92 pitches.

Jon Jay, Allen Craig, Pujols, Lance Berkman and David Freese created a staccato first-inning attack that left Myers clearly irritated and brought manager Brad Mills to the mound.

Carpenter entered the start with 2281/3 innings and left with his fifth straight outing of at least seven innings. Carpenter allowed five runs combined in that span.

Wednesday night served as final validation to the late July trades that acquired starting pitcher Edwin Jackson, relievers Marc Rzepczynski and Octavio Dotel, shortstop Rafael Furcal and outfielder Corey Patterson. A team that labored for traction after its 37-25 start found itself at only 67-63 following the Dodgers fiasco. The Cardinals have since lost consecutive games only twice and not endured a three-game losing streak.

The Cardinals bumped their lead to 6-0 with an unearned run in the third inning and added on in the fifth when Freese moved around on consecutive ground balls after leading off with a double.

Craig, who generated four RBIs after entering Tuesday's game in the fourth inning, smacked his second home run in as many nights and 11th of the season to account for the final margin.

While the offense generated double-digit hits, Carpenter amassed a season-most 11 strikeouts his first three times through the Astros order. He worked as a steamroller, taking the ball and quickly feeding it back to catcher Yadier Molina against a lineup barely there. Carpenter allowed himself a brief indulgence during the seventh inning when, hearing a buzz from the healthy contingent of Cardinals fans behind the third-base dugout, he dropped the ball and stole a glance at the left-field scoreboard that read: PHI 3, ATL 3.

Carpenter entered the ninth inning with 98 pitches but the Astros seemed glad to play along with a limp ninth that allowed Carpenter to work his fourth complete game and second shutout of the season.

Huskers Outlast Ohio State, Improve to 2-0 in Big Ten Play

Lincoln, Neb. - The tenth-ranked Huskers (9-1) advanced to 2-0 in Big Ten Conference play with a 3-1 win over No. 24 Ohio State Saturday night at the NU Coliseum. In front of 4,061 fans, Nebraska honored a true Husker legend as Nancy Metcalf's jersey was retired. Metcalf became just the seventh Husker volleyball player to have her jersey retired at the Coliseum. Hannah Werth notched a season-high 13 kills on the night to lead and NU and pace Gina Mancuso and Morgan Broekhuis to double-figure kills as well, as both tabbed 11. Lauren Cook led NU defensively with 14 digs in addition to 41 assists. Lara Dykstra had 13 digs for the Huskers.
Nebraska hit .342 for the match, while holding Ohio State to a .134 hitting percentage and only six blocks. The Buckeyes also committed 29 errors on the night.
The Huskers and Buckeyes tied eight different times in the first set, last at 23-23. Ohio State jumped ahead early with a service ace to make it 5-4. Nebraska tied it at six on a kill by Delano and again at 10 on another kill by Broekhuis. The Huskers took a 16-13 lead on an attack error by Ohio State and then went up 19-15 on a kill by Cook. A kill by Mancuso made it 21-18 late in the first set, before Ohio State tied it up at 23 all. Nebraska then pulled away to take the first set on an error by the Buckeyes. Nebraska won the first set 25-23 and led the match 1-0.
In the first set Mancuso led NU with four kills on eight attacks for a .500 hitting percentage. Brooke Delano, Broekhuis and Werth each had two kills. Cook tabbed seven assists and six digs for NU in the set.
The Huskers hit .300 as a team in the first set, while holding Ohio State to a .184 hitting percentage.  Nebraska out-blocked the Buckeyes five to one and saw Ohio State make seven errors on the set.
In the second set Nebraska came out strong, going up 9-7 on a kill by Delano. A kill by Werth made it 15-13 Nebraska, but Ohio State came inching back to tie it up at 15. The Buckeyes and Huskers tied again at 19 and the Buckeyes eventually went up 22-21. The Husker tied it up again at 23 on an error by Ohio State, but NU could not capitalize and lost the match 25-23. Ohio State and Nebraska headed into the break tied at one set apiece.
In the second set Werth led NU with five kills, while Broekhuis had four of her own. Cook notched 13 assists, as Werth and Dykstra both had four digs.
Nebraska dominated Ohio State in the third set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead on an error by the Buckeyes. The Huskers stretched that lead to 18-7 on a kill by Mancuso. Ohio State scored no more than 11 points in the set, as NU went on to win the third set 25-11 and lead the match 2-1.
Mancuso and Werth each had three kills in the set, while Delano and Broekhuis both had two. Cook had nine assists to guide NU to a hitting percentage of .600. Nebraska held Ohio State to a -.100 hitting percentage and no blocks.
Nebraska came on strong in the fourth set, going up 5-4 on a kill by Broekhuis. NU eventually went up 15-9 on an error by the Buckeyes, and stretched the lead 19-12 with a kill by Werth. The closest Ohio State got in the last half of the set was five points, as NU finished off the Buckeyes with a 25-16 fourth set win and took the match 3-1.
The Huskers hit the road next weekend for their first away matches in the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska will take on Michigan State on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich. The Huskers then travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face the Wolverines on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. Nebraska's match with Michigan will air via tape delay on ESPN2 on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1:30 p.m. (CT).

Owensville Dutchmen Clouds Hermann Bearcats Homecoming: Mid Missouri High School Football

Penalties, fumbles, dropped balls, and an interception did the Bearcats in Friday night.  It was too much to overcome for Hermann as they dropped to 0-5 on the season.  

The Bearcats offense played much better in the 2nd half but the defense could not seem to stop the Dutchmen Offense as they ran up and down the field, almost at will, and went on to win easily 54-34.

Owensville QB Shawnee Wright had over 240 yards rushing in the game.



The Dutchmen (2-3, 1-2) held leads of 21-8 after one quarter, 34-14 at halftime and 47-20 after three quarters.
The Bearcats (0-5, 0-5) were able to get their offense going, but had a hard time slowing down the Owensville offense.
Owensville hosts Pacific in week six. Hermann travels to North Callaway.

TSA Style Patdowns Coming to Your Local....NFL Game?

The NFL wants all fans patted down from the ankles up this season to improve fan safety.

Under the new "enhanced" pat-down procedures, the NFL wants all 32 clubs to search fans from the ankles to the knees as well as the waist up. Previously, security guards only patted down fans from the waist up while looking for booze, weapons or other banned items.

The stricter physical screening policy impacts the 16.6 million fans expected to attend live regular season NFL games this season. The more thorough searches will spell longer lines for ticket-holding fans seeking entry to games. It's sure to raise the ire of some fans who consider it an invasion of privacy.

The move comes after a man used an illegal stun gun on another fan at a New York Jets-Dallas Cowboys game.

Coming close to reaching another school record, the Union Wildcats turned up the scoring Friday night to defeat Hermann on homecoming, 70-14.
Union’s program record for most points in a game came against Hermann in 2007 during a 77-55 win. The Wildcats (4-0, 2-0) nearly repeated that feat against Hermann (0-4, 0-4). However, Hermann’s offense couldn’t keep up.
The Wildcats really turned on the heat during a 1:22 span late in the second quarter, scoring 21 points during that time. That turned a 21-6 game into a 48-6 rout by the halftime festivities.
Union never trailed in the game and started the scoring with a three-yard run by Steven Jones with 7:26 left in the first quarter. The extra-point kick failed, bouncing off the left upright, and Union led, 6-0.
The Wildcats were back in action when Chris Savage connected with Tyler Johnson for a 53-yard touchdown pass with 5:10 to go in the quarter. Ryan Coons ran for the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.
Hermann fumbled on its first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, another recurring theme on the night, and the Wildcats took advantage of the short field to score again with 3:14 to play in the quarter. Coons caught a four-yard pass from Savage for the score. The extra-point kick failed and it was 20-0 at the end of one quarter.
Hermann got on the board early in the second quarter. Nick Koenig caught a 12-yard pass from Justin Wurtz with 11:08 left in the half. The Bearcats attempted a two-point run, but failed. Union’s lead was cut to 21-6.
Union got right back to work. Moving down the field on a pass from Savage to Tyler King, the Wildcats got a big run by Ryan Baser up the field to the one-yard line. Baser scored on the next play from one yard out and Savage hit Coons for the conversion to make it 28-6.
Union’s big run hit late in the half. Baser scored from 13 yards out with 3:48 left in the half. Logan Williams kicked the extra point and Union was up, 35-6.
Hermann again fumbled the ball deep in its own territory, and that set up a 16-yard pass from Savage to Narvell Smith with 2:48 left in the half. Williams kicked the extra point to make it 42-6.
After Williams returned an interception to the Hermann 20, Jones ran in for the final score of the half from 20 yards out with 2:26 left. Williams kicked the extra point to make it 49-6.
Even with the running clock in the second half, Union still found time to score 21 more points while Hermann added another score.
Union hosts Ft. Zumwalt East next week. The Wildcats lost their only regular season game to Zumwalt East last season on a play in the closing seconds. Hermann hosts Owensville in a Four Rivers Conference game which also is the Gasconade County Bowl. Kickoff both places will be at 7 p.m.


The #3 Union Wildcats easily handled the much smaller Hermann Bearcats tonight in Union, Missouri.

Hermann started their first possession in the no-huddle offence but only netted 1 first down before having to punt to Union.

Union then easily drove down the field to score the first TD of the game but missed the PAT to lead 6-0.

Bearcats failed to gain any yardage on their next series of downs and punted.

Union's second series featured Tyler Johnson caught a 53 yard TD from QB Chris Savage  and scored a 2-point conversion to take a 14-0 lead.

Hermann then fumbled deep in their own territory on their 3rd possession and Union recovered.

Union took advantage of the short field and and scored their third TD on a pass from QB Savavge to Ryan Coons but again failed to convert a PAT.  This gave Union a 20-0 lead in the 1st Quarter.

Hermann starting on their own 20, then again appeared to fail to get a first down until they faked a punt on their 5th series.  The Bearcats did manage 4 more first downs, 80 yards total and scored on 13 yard TD pass by QB Justin Wurtz to 53 early in the 2nd Quarter.  This was one of the most impressive drives to-date for the Bearcat Offense.   Union lead was 20-6 as Hermann failed to convert a 2 point conversion.

 Union's first drive of the 2nd Quarter yielded 3 first downs as they drove down the field for another TD.  The 2 point conversion was successful, a pass from QB Savage to Coons.  28 -6 Union.

Hermann's offense then started on their 20-yard-line. The Bearcats got 2 first downs before Union intercepted Wurtz.

Union could not take advantage of the turn-over as Hermann intercepted a pass on their own 13-yard-line.

Hermann then punted after failing to generate a first down.

Union then got 2 first downs and easily drove down the field for another TD.  PAT GOOD 35-6

Hermann's next possession yielded 1 first down but a fumble ended the Bearcat drive quickly.

Union struck quick  to take a 42-6 lead after the PAT.

Hermann started on their 20 but threw an interception into double coverage.

Union took just 2 plays to score and take a 49-6 lead after the PAT.

Hermann again lined up at the 20 after the kickoff and manged 1 first down before time ran out to end the half.

The Wildcats recovered an onside kick to start the second half at the 50 yard line.  50 yards on the ground and 2 first downs later Union scored again, PAT Good. 56-6

Hermann failed to get a first down on their series of the 2nd half and punted.

Union started at their own 14 yard line.  The Wildcats gained 86 yards and 4 first downs on their next drive and scored another TD. PAT good.  63-6

Bearcats started on their own 18 and yielded 3 first down but the dive stalled and union took over on downs.

Union then dove down the field 2 first downs and another TD. PAT good. 70-6

Hermann next drive produced 2 first downs, 76 yard drive plus two nice 25 yard running plays by Armando Matech and a TD pass Wurtz to Nick Koenig. 2 point conversion was good. 70-14

Union then recovered the onside kick.  Time ran out during this drive

The stricter physical screenings could be reassuring to fans worried about safety -- especially after Sunday's stun gun incident at a Jets-Cowboys game. Others are likely to regard it as an invasion of privacy.

The NFL recommended the new guidelines before the kickoff of the 2011 season which coincided with the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The league hopes fans will be "patient," says spokesman Brian McCarthy, and arrive earlier to games to avoid long, punishing lines.
"The enhanced security procedures recommended by our office before the start of the season will further increase the safety of fans but will require some additional time," McCarthy told USA TODAY in a statement Thursday. "We encourage fans to come early, enjoy their tailgating tradition, and be patient as they enter the stadium."

The NFL suffered damage to its family-friendly image when a South Carolina man was arrested for using an illegal stun gun on other fans at a New York Jets-Dallas Cowboys game Sunday night.

A tough loss for Hermann on a rainy evening in Pacific.

Pacific easily handled the mistake-prone Bearcats 48-0.

Hermann was suffering with 6 major injuries, 5 to seniors.

The Pacific players appeared much bigger in size than the Hermann players.

The Indians (2-1, 1-0) dominated their Four Rivers Conference opener against Hermann Friday at Pacific High School.
Pacific jumped to leads of 21-0 after one quarter and 35-0 at halftime.
Quarterback Kyle Burgess threw for two touchdowns in the first half and ran for another.
Also in the first half, running back Coty Kremer had three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving.
Kremer finished the game with four touchdowns. He rushed for 180 yards.
Burgess threw three touchdowns and rushed for one. He was 4-10 passing for 105 yards and three touchdowns.
Alex Gentry had two touchdown receptions, one in the first half and one in the second half.
Hermann (0-3, 0-3) had no answer for the Indians’ defense.
The entire second half was played with a running clock.
Pacific returns to action Friday with a week four matchup at Festus. Hermann takes on Union in a FRC contest.

Two of Missouri’s most successful volleyball programs clashed Tuesday at Borgia.
And the host Lady Knights, owners of nine MSHSAA state championships, defeated 11-time state winner Hermann in two games, 25-19, 25-16.
“You’ve got to tip your hat to Hermann,” Tyree said. “They’re a fine ballclub. They’ve got great jump servers. They put pressure on you and keep the ball in play.”
Both teams are in a similar situation this season as they each graduated large senior groups last season.
“I feel like both teams are in kind of a rebuilding mode,” Hermann Head Coach Linda Lampkin said. “It is early and sometimes that makes for some pretty erratic volleyball. Our inexperience really showed up on defense. It seems like we could rally with them for a while, but in the long run, they won most of the long rallies. Borgia did a much better job of playing defense than we did.”
Borgia, which finished second in the Class 3 state tournament in 2010, managed to pull together quicker to beat the defending Class 2 champion Hermann in two games.
Both sets were close early, but Borgia was able to pull away to record the victory. It was the second year in a row that Borgia has won the regular season meeting and ended a two-year run by visiting teams in the showdown.
Borgia was paced by senior Kristina Fitzpatrick, who ended with eight kills while hitting .500. The Baylor recruit moved from outside hitter to rightside hitter for the match and Tyree feels the switch worked well.
“I was impressed with putting Krissi on the right side,” Tyree said. “I think that gives her more options. She gets a good block. She has the ability to set the ball. When you can run slides and attack the ball like she does from the back side, that just opens up so much for us. I was impressed.”
Katie Lindemann hit .556 with six kills and Taylor Mentz hit .313 with six kills.
“I thought Taylor Mentz did a nice job on the outside,” Tyree said. “She’s coming off a knee injury, so Molly Arand went in and played back row for her. Molly did a stellar job for being in for the first time as a freshman. When Taylor gets a little rest, she does a nice job for us offensively.”
Hanna Glastetter added five kills while Janie Arand had two kills and Sarah Geatley ended with one.
Tyree praised the play of Janie Arand, who was Borgia’s setter.
“What a nice job Janie Arand did tonight,” Tyree said. “She kept the ball in play a lot of times. Kudos to our defense. I thought they played better.”
Arand also paced Borgia’s setters with 20 set assists. Bryggen Korte had two while Fitzpatrick and Mentz each ended with one.
At the net, Glastetter had two total blocks with one solo and one assist. Arand ended with one block assist.
Fitzpatrick led the team with 12 digs while Korte posted nine, Janie Arand ended with five, Molly Arand and Mentz each had three and Clara Blatt, Glastetter and Lindemann each had one dig.
Blatt and Fitzpatrick each served one ace.
Lampkin said Hermann served well.
“I was pleased with our serving,” Lampkin said. “I felt like we were able to put some pressure on them from the serving line. Hannah Steinbeck really did some tough jump serving for us.”

Last year, I made my first visit to ShelbyFest, held for the past five years in Hermann, Missouri. I quickly understood that it would not be my last trip when I called home from my Wine Valley Inn room to tell my wife about the historic German village filled with antique shops and wineries. Typically, Pam doesn't issue orders, but this time she said, "You're going back next year and taking me!"

So I followed instructions and this year once again arranged to fly into Kansas City, where Pam and I spent the first evening with Jeff and Julie Yergovich at R&A Motorsports in nearby Lees Summit. Like last year, Jeff offered the use of a late-model Mustang for the weekend, this time one of R&A's Twister Specials, which certainly made the cross-state drive to Hermann more pleasurable as opposed to the company-mandated compact rental car. Once in Hermann, Pam pretty much disappeared into the antique stores. I only heard from her when she needed cash.

ShelbyFest is a totally unique Ford event, celebrating everything Shelby but also including anything and everything with a Ford oval. Originally founded by Kyle Caraway as a get-together for local owners of newer Shelbys, the event has grown to nearly 400 cars on the Saturday of the show in downtown Hermann.

I can see why. While the city of Hermann shuts down several streets for the Saturday show, there is a lot more to see and do in the area, something that definitely appeals to those of us who have been attending Mustang shows for over three decades. I was surprised to learn that eastern Missouri is well-known for its vineyards. Winery tours are a popular ShelbyFest activity, perhaps because of the wine tasting at the end. This year, ShelbyFest also included a ziplining tour through the Missouri forest thanks to ShelbyFest sponsor Eco Zipline Tours, located just a few miles north of Hermann. Driving a fast Shelby is one thing, but zipping through the air on a cable is a totally different kind of thrill. Our group had so much fun that Caraway hopes to add ziplining to next year's official ShelbyFest schedule.

Like last year, the 2011 ShelbyFest, held over the April 29-31 weekend, included a Friday night concert, Saturday evening banquet, and Sunday morning pancake breakfast. This year, the event also incorporated a ride-along autocross hosted by Gateway Performance. Actually, it was more of a drifting exhibition as Gateway's Jason Childers took passengers along for a slip-sliding ride in one of Gateway's Mustang race cars.

A Gridiron stunner came in Owensville, where the sixth-ranked Sullivan Eagles dominated play in a 44-6 Four Rivers Conference victory over the second-ranked Dutchmen.
Sullivan (2-0) plays at De Soto next Friday while Owensville heads to Borgia (2-0). Both games start at 7 p.m.
Sullivan opened scoring in the first quarter when Adam Weiland hauled in a 33-yard pass from Adam Tiefenbrunn.
Sullivan led 26-0 at the half. Owensville’s Jason Kottwitz scored the only touchdown for the Dutchmen, but it was a memorable one as he went 98 yards.

Hermann Bearcats Lose Close Game to St. James

Friday night Four Rivers Conference game ended in a 32-26 win for the No. 8 St. James Tigers (2-0) over the No. 11 Hermann Bearcats (0-2).
Jake Harlan hit Justin Lineback for a 31-yard touchdown pass with 6:23 to play to break a 26-26 tie in the game.
It was Harlan’s third touchdown pass of the game and Lineback’s second. Lineback has caught four touchdown passes this season. Harland also ran for two scores in the win.
St. James hosts Union next Friday while Hermann travels to Pacific (1-1).
The game started with a wild first quarter. St. James outscored the Bearcats, 20-14.
St. James jumped on top in the opening minute as Lineback caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Harlan with 11:18 left in the quarter. St. James converted the extra-point kick and led 7-0.
Hermann came back on a 71-yard run by Justin Wurtz with 8:35 left in the quarter. The conversion attempt failed and St. James led, 7-6.
The Tigers went up again, 14-6, on a one-yard run by Harlan with 4:26 left in the quarter. Hermann countered with Nick Koenig returning the kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown with 4:10 to play. A two-point conversion attempt was good and it was 14-14.
Harlan hit Caleb Martensen for a 35-yard scoring strike with 3:08 left in the first quarter. The kick failed.
Hermann came back to tie it with 2:50 left in the half on a nine-yard run by Dalton Grosse. Hermann again went for the two-point conversion, but failed and it was 20-20 at the intermission.
Harlan’s 29-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter broke the deadlock, but Hermann tied it on a two-yard run by Wurtz with 8:00 left in the game.
That’s how it stood until Harlan hit Lineback with 6:23 to play.

NEWPORT BEACH (CBS) — Massive waves are expected to pummel Southern California’s coast through Sunday.
At The Wedge in Newport Beach, waves averaged 10 to 12 feet Thursday, with some reaching higher than 20 feet.
The Wedge has spectacularly high surf due to a jetty that causes waves to bounce off rocks and back into themselves, adding up to 25 percent more height. “It just gets real shallow here, it’s two waves coming together, the wave jumps up just twice its size,” said surfer Steve Morgan.
“It’s like the whole washing machine effect. You’re getting upside down underwater and starting to lose your energy, but once you hit the beach it’s like, all right, whew, you’re still alive,” said surfer Spencer Pirdy.
“It reverberates off the rocks and it has a lot of water moving around, a lot of rip currents that just suck you out and keep you in there forever,” Pirdy added. “Yeah, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you’re in a lot of trouble regardless of what luck is on your side.” A surfer died at the famous spot during a swell there in 2009.
Pirdy said he loves the rush of energy that comes from surfing in waves like these.
“It’s just a rush of adrenaline when you’re making that drop. It’s like nothing else matters, you just wanna make it,” he said.
Those who enter the water – experienced surfers and swimmers – must receive permission from lifeguards. However, when a black flag goes up, surfers and body boarders are no longer allowed in the water.
Thousands have lined the shores of area beaches to get a sight of some of the state’s biggest waves.
“Yesterday we couldn’t believe how big it was, so we had to come back today and try to get here early enough to get a parking place,” said one spectator.
Lifeguards said they did make two rescues on Thursday after two professional surfers needed assistance getting out of the water after they said they were pounded by the waves too hard.
More than 3,000 spectators gathered at The Wedge Thursday, but more onlookers are expected Friday, when the surge returns.
