Grocery prices grow by 1.5 times inflation rate and there's more to come

__________________________________________________________________________

Food prices rise sharply - and there's more to come

For the first time since 2008, inflation is hitting consumers in the stomach.

Grocery prices grew by more than 1 1/2 times the overall rate of inflation this year, outpaced only by costs of transportation and medical care, according to numbers released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Economists predict that this is only the beginning. Fueled by the higher costs of wheat, sugar, corn, soybeans and energy, shoppers could see as much as a 4 percent increase at the supermarket checkout next year.

While overall inflation nationwide was 1.1 percent, grocery prices went up 1.7 percent nationally and 1.3 percent

Across the country, the price of produce has remained fairly steady. But the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts that next year the price of fruits and vegetables, like many other food commodities, could go up. The government agency is forecasting a 2 to 3 percent food inflation rate in 2011 - a pace that is not unusual in a rebounding economy.

Gas, diesel play a role

Gas and diesel prices also are playing a role. Wheat costs went through the roof this year when 20 percent of Russia's crop was destroyed by drought and wildfires, causing the country, the third-largest producer in the world, to ban exports of the grain. The price of sugar, also used for ethanol in parts of the world, is priced at a two-decade high.

Kraft Foods Inc., one of the world's largest food producers, has already announced plans to increase its prices because of mounting ingredient costs and flagging sales. General Mills, maker of everything from flour and baking mixes to cereal and Yoplait yogurt, has said it, too, will raise some of its product prices in January. Experts said consumers can expect the same from Kellogg's and Nestle.

The Bearcats open the 2010-2011 cage season at home on Dec. 3 with a non-conference game against South Callaway. Their next four games will be on the road.  Hermann's first conference game is at St. Clair on Tuesday, Dec.14.

Tim Wenkel, starting his fourth season as Hermann's head coach, returns three starters from a team that finished 20-9 a year ago and won the district title for the first time in 31 years.  Gone from last year's team are Jake Witthaus, Greg Wright, Sidney Daller and Austin VanBooven.

The Bearcats lost to Ava, 53-48, in the Class 3 sectional at Rolla after leading in that game most of the way.

Jake Schannuth, a 6-5 junior who averaged 13 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists last year, is the top scorer returning to the squad. Phil Wright, a 6-foot senior guard, and Ethan Kirchhofer, a 5-10 junior guard, are the other returning starters. Wright had a 4.5 scoring average a year ago whole Kirchhofer averaged 2.0 points a game.

Moving up from the junior varsity are Zach Hackmann, 6-foot junior guard; Jonathan Baumstark, 6-1 sophomore; and Jackson Logan, a 6-6 junior.

Other newcomers on the varsity this season will be Nick Koenig, a 6-2 junior; and Craig Winkelmann, a 5-9 freshman.

The Bearcats will have a busy January, as all three of their tournaments will be played that month.

For the first time in 36 years, Hermann won't be in the Mongomery County Invitational. The Bearcats have pulled out of that tournament and are going back to the Owensville Invitational, which they left in 1973 to enter the Montgomery tourney.

The Owensville Tournament is Jan. 3-8; the South Callaway Tournament is Jan. 10-15; and the annual Hermann Tournament is Jan. 25-29.
