Sergeant First Class Robert Pharris, of Seymour, died January 5 when his vehicle hit a roadside bomb.
Funeral of Sgt. 1st Class Robert Wayne Pharris in Seymore, Mo. on Sunday, January 16, 2011. Pharris was killed by an improvised explosive device in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan on January 5.

The 48-year-old guardsman was a member of the Guard's Agri-Business Development Team.
His funeral was Sunday in Seymour. His body was transported from there the next morning to fly out of Lambert Airport.

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — A soldier from Ste. Genevieve, Mo., assigned to the 101st Airborne Division has died after an explosion in Afghanistan.
The Army said Sgt. Michael J. Beckerman, 25, died Friday in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
Beckerman arrived at Fort Campbell in January last year and was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Support Troop Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.
Beckerman joined the Army in September 2004. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon and the Combat Action Badge.

Thanks for posting this Prayer Chain Letter! Please add my thoughts and prayers for the safety and well-being of all now serving in the United States military. On this day of remembrance, I particularly remember my deceased father who served as an Army Medic during WWII. Some of his WWII veteran buddies still reside here in Hermann. I recall that my father never liked to talk about the horrible things he saw in North Africa and Italy. As a kid, I sensed that reluctance to talk about war among all of his V.F.W. friends. They were indeed America's "Greatest Generation"! God bless them all for keeping the world free for democracy! And God bless all of our brave young servicemen and servicewomen for following faithfully in their fine American tradition!

"One small story from the video . . . towards the end, there's a photo of a young man surrounded by photographs and letters (a few of the pictures are of B-24 Liberators). This young man was lost with his entire crew while flying in a B-24 ...over the Atlantic. I bought his training yearbook, which included all of these photos of his family, friends and girlfriend. Also in the book were signed letters of condolence from his squadron mates, his squadron commander, the mayor of St. Louis and Hap Arnold, CIC of the Army Air Force. The back of the book was filled with news clippings about his death. Sad . . . what's sadder is that I found this in a BOX OF JUNK at a consignment auction. How this ends up almost being thrown on the rubbish pile is a shame. Either his family didn't care, didn't know it was there or . . . there is no family. I am happy to have preserved his memory. I won't sell this item. Just look at that kid's face. He WAS just a KID. I thank him and people like him every day."

Spc. Justin Eric Culbreth, 26.

A 26-year-old soldier from rural Wentzville was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan.
Army Specialist Justin Culbreth died when his vehicle came into contact with an improvised explosive device (IED). The exact date of his death remains unknown. Culbreth's parents were notified of his death on Wednesday.
Culbreth, a married father of two, received his GED from Warrenton High School after years of home schooling.
Culbreth was stationed out of Tennessee. It is not yet known where or when funeral and burial services will take place.

(On a side note, I was in the 1st Gulf War. Never went into Iraq. We went into Kuwait. We probably should have gone into Iraq . . . then . . . but that's another story for another day.)
