Shelby Winkelmann has been selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 5th annual Under Armour Girls High School All-America Team, it was announced last Wednesday.
Winkelmann, a four-time first team all-stater from Hermann who recently signed with Nebraska, is one of four high school players from Missouri to receive All-America honors. She was named to the second team, along with Tara Dykstra of Redondo Beach, Calif., who will be her teammate at Nebraska. All three Husker recruits were on the All-America list. Taylor Simpson, 6-3 outside hitter of Doharty High School in Colorado Springs, Colo., was named to the first team.
The only player from Missouri on the first team is Jade Hayes of Ozark, a 6-foot outside hitter who will attend the University of Missouri.
Two players from St. Joseph Academy in St. Louis, this year's Class 4 state champion, were on the AVCA All-America team. They are Helen Boyle, a 5-11 outside hitter who will attend LSU, and Taylor Masterson, a 6-foot middle blocker who will attend Alabama.
Winkelmann played in four state volleyball tournaments, and the Lady Bearcats won the state championship this year and in 2008. The 5-9 outside hitter will be used as a libero and defensive specialist at Nebraska.
The 100 players selected for this year's All-America honor teams represent 31 states and 87 high schools. Many have already committed to play collegiate volleyball at some of the top programs in the country.
Each of the players on the first team will be invited to play in the Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match & Skills Competition. The event will be held at Municipal Auditorium, December 18 in Kansas City, Mo., in conjunction with the 2010 AVCA Annual Convention.
Requirements for nomination were that the student-athlete be in her senior year of high school, that she be nominated by her high school coach, that her coach be a member of the AVCA and that her individual season statistics versus all opponents for the entire season be entered into MaxPreps, a free service that aggregates and distributes data on high school sports.
