A request from Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to help Missourians impacted by the New Year's Eve tornadoes was denied by FEMA this week, according to the Governor's office. Nixon filed the request for a major disaster declaration on Jan. 14 on behalf of residents in nine counties, including Franklin.
Seemingly undeterred by this development, Nixon filed another request for tornado victims Wednesday, this one for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. SBA disaster loans are issued to homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private, non-profit organizations to repair or replace real estate, personal property, machinery and equipment, inventory and business assets that have been damaged or destroyed, according to Nixon's office.
The denial from FEMA will not impact the Governor’s request for the SBA loans, Nixon's office said.
FEMA toured Franklin County in early January, assessing the damage from an EF2 tornado that struck near Robertsville, and smaller tornadoes that touched down near Washington. FEMA's initial assessment showed over 60 area homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed by the tornadoes.
