The Hermann Lady Bearcats are seeded third in the 30th annual Montgomery County Basketball Tournament that starts Monday, Nov. 29.

The Lady Bearcats, who won the tourney last year with a win over Mexico in the championship game, were seeded behind Mexico (#1) and Clopton (#2) in this year's event.

The winner of the Hermann-Wellsville game will play the winner of the Clopton and Fulton game on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. The two losers of the first-round games will play at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 1.

Mexico will play 9th seeded New Haven in the first game at 4:30 p.m. next Monday, Nov. 29, and No. 4 seed Bowling Green takes on No. 5 Montgomery county at 6 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3.

Hermann defeated Mexico, 56-48, in the championship game last year. It was the Lady Bearcats' first title at Montgomery City in 18 years.

Shelby Winkelmann and Ashley Brooks, both senior guards, are the only two starters back from last year's team that was 26-4 and reached the state quarterfinals.

Winkelmann is Hermann's all-time scoring leader with 2,321 points in three seasons. Last year she led the St. Louis area in scoring with 829 points, a 27.5 pergame average. Brooks was the team's second leading scorer, averaging over 10 points a game.

Corby Hackmann also returns after coming off the bench and seeing lots of playing time for the Lady Bearcats last year.

Moving up from last year's junior varsity will be Hannah Steinbeck (6-1) and Laura Rethemeyer (5-10), and they give Hermann more height than it had last year. A third junior, 5-9 guard Mikaela Ruga, joins the varsity this season.

Jamie Gleeson, a 5-10 freshman, will play with the varsity when it opens the season in the Montgomery County Tournament. A second freshman, Karinne Lane, a   5-2 guard, will be a member of the varsity, but will play with the junior varsity in the Hermann JV Tournament, which goes on the same week as the Montgomery County tourney.

Hermann Coach Todd Anderson will have only seven girls dress for the Montgomery Tournament, since the rest of the squad will play in the Hermann JV Tournament.

The Lady Bearcats won the Four Rivers Conference title last year for the first time since 1988, going undefeated in league games. But they will have   their hands full this winter. The league is loaded with talented teams. Pacific, St. Clair, St. James, Sullivan, Union and New Haven all return veteran lineups.

Hermann will play in the Prepscast Elite Shootout at CBC again this season, and its opponent will be St. Dominic, a Class 4 final four team last season. That game will be Jan. 8, 2011, at 5:30 p.m.

The Lady Bearcats will also play in the Mike Kehoe Shootout at Jefferson City High School on Dec. 27, and their opponent will be California at 5 p.m.
