HERMANN HIGH SCHOOL STANDOUT NAMED GATORADE® MISSOURI GIRLS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

CHICAGO (March 10, 2011) — In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Shelby Winkelmann of Hermann High School as its 2010-11 Gatorade Missouri Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Winkelmann is the first Gatorade Missouri Girls Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Hermann High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Winkelmann as Missouri’s best high school girls basketball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award announced in March, Winkelmann joins an elite alumni association of past state girls basketball award-winners, including Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central HS, Ill.), Diana Taurasi (1998-99 & 1999-00, Don Antonio Lugo HS, Calif.), Maya Moore (2005-06 Collins Hill HS, Ga.), Rashanda McCants (2004-05, Asheville HS, N.C.), Shyra Ely (1999-00, Ben Davis HS, Ind.) and Lisa Leslie (1988-89, Morningside HS, Calif.)
The 5-foot-9 senior guard led the Bearcats to a 22-5 record entering the first round of the Class 3 state tournament against Skyline, scheduled for March 9. Entering the state postseason, Winkelmann was averaging 28.0 points, 8.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.3 steals per game while posting a 59.0 field-goal percentage. A three-time returning Class 3 All-State selection as named by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association, she averaged 27.6 points per game as a junior, 28.5 as a sophomore and 21.3 as a freshman. Winkelmann owns the Four Rivers Conference career scoring record and ranked fourth in Missouri history at the time of her selection.
Also a volleyball standout, Winkelmann has maintained a 4.28 weighted GPA in the classroom and ranks No. 1 in her graduating class. She serves as vice president in Hermann’s senior class and the Distributive Education Clubs of America chapter as well as secretary of the Future Business Leaders of America chapter. In addition to donating her time as a youth basketball and volleyball instructor and referee, Winkelmann has volunteered locally on behalf of a food pantry, her church, A-Plus Tutoring, the Special Olympics and Young Achievers International.
“While Shelby’s stats are very impressive, it is her attitude, character and work ethic that truly set her apart,” said Hermann Head Coach Todd Anderson. “Shelby is the ultimate student-athlete. She is ranked No. 1 in her class, excels on the court and is very involved in other clubs and organizations in our school and community. She approaches practice the same way she does games—with an all-out, maximum effort. She is a tremendous role model for our younger athletes. Shelby’s stats speak for themselves, as she is an extremely talented basketball player, but they give you a very limited view of the overall quality of the individual.”
Winkelmann has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball on scholarship at the University of Nebraska this fall.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by ESPN RISE and the Gatorade high school sports leadership team, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
Winkelmann joins recent Gatorade Missouri Girls Basketball Players of the Year Jazmin Hitchens (2009-10, Incarnate Word Academy), Katherine Harry (2008-09, Rock Bridge), and Kathleen Scheer (2007-08, New Haven) among the state’s list of former award winners.
