Hermann Missouri NOT Included in Emergency Planning Zone of Ameren Callaway Nuclear Plant

by: Hermann Mo News

An Ameren Missouri Ad appeared in the Wednesday, May 25, 2011 Hermann Advertiser Courier (the complete ad is shown at the bottom of this posting).   The ad seems to imply that Ameren's responsibility ends at the border of the Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) and is only obligated to notify people who live within the designated Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ).  According to the above map, Hermann, Missouri is NOT within the EPZ.

In fact the furthest the EPZ boundary is from the Reactor is a mere 15 miles near Rhineland.  The majority of the boundary is much less (the entire EPZ boundary appears to average about 20 km or approx. 12.5 miles or less - see 20 km radius map below).

We contacted Ameren Missouri and were advised to purchase an 'Alert Weather Radio' from RadioShack for about $25.

They also would like the rate payers to pay roughly $45 million for an early site permit for a second new nuclear reactor at the Callaway site. SEE STORY
